A cousin of mine posed the following question recently: Ok, silly question, but I want to know if there is anyone out there who has NOT been affected by this recession/depression?? I get so mad at the "experts" who say that it is over and things are improving. I personally don't see it. Anyone out there want to comment??
Here's what I wrote:
Honestly ... not as much here as most. My Disability/Early Retirement amount has not gone up for the second year in a row because of no Cost Of Living Allowance but my husband has had plenty of stops to pick up or drop off so HIS income has stayed pretty steady.
I honestly haven't seen the latest job reports, but I CAN comment that the unemployment rate may be declining due to people losing their Unemployment bennies or losing the will to keep searching. There also may be a bit of a pick-up in job creation. So ... it's possible that some pundits may be looking at numbers that are skewed or that they are being overly optomistic to report it "over" OR a combination of the two. It's also possible that the economy HAS started to improve just a tiny bit in actuality which would be an indication of better things to come.
Now, even *if* the economy is recovering slightly, it would likely be a very slow process and for a lot of people WOULD get worse before it gets better (which WILL happen regardless of whether the economy is starting to recover now or if it goes on longer) once the economy is recovering it will NOT be a rapid process - regardless of what people WANT to happen. And this will prompt many to say "See? It's not working. It's not going FAST ENOUGH". Keep in mind how long it took us to get INTO this mess (hint - *more* than 2 administrations so BOTH sides are at fault) so why does everybody EXPECT that we can snap our fingers and have everything back to the way it was?
*sigh* Sorry - as an Independant I see the fault as the entire political process and not limited to one side or the other. The Conservative Right trumpets how deep it's gone and how far we have to go - but it would NOT have been any different if McCain had won the election in 2008. Whether we would have been SLIGHTLY better off or SLIGHTLY worse is up for debate among economists, the flat truth is that we would STILL have been in a recession for the last 2 years regardless of who was elected President. I wish the people in DC would learn how to play well with others and find the middle ground and stop all the *bleep* with name-calling and mud-slinging.
Now to expand on this (since I didn't want to eat up my cousin's FaceBook wall). Yes, I admit that I tend toward the Liberal side of the Moderate spectrum. I came from a VERY Liberal stance as a young adult, but I rarely vote a straight ticket in ANY election and I haven't since I started voting at 18. Because I tend toward the Liberal side I also tend to get the most irate at the Conservative element in DC than the Liberals. BUT - I think the Democrats and Republicans BOTH have made some horrible mistakes. I also have become much more moderate in my views in a lot of areas (despite what my father might think).
It really ticks me off that SO MANY PEOPLE forget that it took a VERY long time to get into this mess and then expect (because of their short attention spans or short memories) that we should be able to get out of this economic mess in the matter of 2 years. This mess started AT LEAST as far back as the 1980's. Many people will argue either that it was Regan's or Clinton's administration that started this ... BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER. Whether it started post-1993 (When Clinton took office) or just really got ROLLING after he took office, it's still a hell of a long time of rapid inflation, rapid home building to put people in houses that couldn't afford them, rapid exportation of American jobs overseas, rapid climbs in the stock markets, dot-coms that ballooned and busted etc. NO PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE COULD HAVE FIXED THIS IN 2 YEARS. PERIOD. So why are we all pointing fingers? Do people honestly believe that McCain could have waved his hands and *POOF* everything would have been "all better" in the space of 12 months or 24 months? I guarantee you that he didn't have a magic wand. We *might* even be worse off if McCain had been elected. Since he lost the election we really have no way of knowing if we would have been SLIGHTLY better off or even worse now. Would he have made different decisions? Possibly, but again - he lost the election so NOBODY can say that he would have made different decisions. Even so-called "ObamaCare" might still have been passed by the House and Senate (even if McCain might have risked being labled divisive and playing partisan politics by vetoing it, the bills did NOT have a 3/5 majority so they would not have survived a veto). But STILL ... the health care bills haven't been FUNDED yet, so they are NOT yet contributing to any debt or having ANY economic impact.
I also deplore the polarization of both political parties. The vast majority of Americans are MODERATES, not liberal OR conservative. So why are the parties pandering to the edges instead of addressing the very valid concerns of the middle ground? When did Republican become synonymous with Fundamental Christian instead of FISCAL conservatism? When did Democrat become synonymous with EXTREME Political Correctness? My father is a life-long Republican but he is NOT a fundamentalist Christian who thinks his WICCAN WIFE is going to hell and he accepts his agnostic daughter's lack of belief and his other daughter's blend of Wiccan, Druid and Native American theologies equally. He DOES buy into the Fox news tale-spinning quite a bit, but he honestly *tries* to see the other side's point of view once in a while. I was always taught to think for myself by this Republican father, he may have disagreed with me a LOT 20 years ago but he respected my right to have an opinion and ENJOYED a free and open debate of platforms, political ideology and respected the points I *did* make back then (as few as they might have been). So why can't Congress do this? Why can't "middle-America" accept the principles our country was founded on (like "Dissent is the truest form of Patriotism" - Thomas Jefferson) and WHY are they following people who CLAIM to back the Constitution yet sound more and more like they've never READ the most important document in our Government?
